A military spokesman said the army and the Assam Rifles were called in on Wednesday night and they, along with the police, brought the violence under control by morning. Curfew has been imposed in non-tribal-dominated Imphal West, Kakching, Thoubal, Jiribam, and Bishnupur districts and tribal-dominated Churdachandpur, Kangpokpi, and Tengnoupal districts, a state official said.
The High Court had given instructions in favor of the Meitei community.
Violence broke out on Wednesday during a tribal solidarity march called by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) in the Torbang area of Churchandpur district against the demand for ST status by the non-tribal Meitei community, which accounts for 53 percent of the state's population. The tribal population in the state is about 40 percent. Last month, the Manipur High Court asked the state government to send a recommendation to the central government within 4 weeks regarding the demand of the Meitei community. It was only after this that ATSUM organized the march.
An armed mob attacked the Meitei community
According to the police, a mob of armed men allegedly attacked people from the Meitei community during the march in the Torbang area. This retaliated with retaliatory attacks in the districts of the Valley, leading to violence across the state.
Several shops and houses were vandalized and arson was also done in the violence which lasted for more than 3 hours in Torbang. In several areas of the Imphal Valley, the houses of the Kuki tribals were ransacked, forcing them to leave the area. Over 500 residents of the Kuki-dominated Langol area in Imphal West have fled their homes and are currently living in the CRPF camp at Lamphelpet.
Some places of worship were also set ablaze in Imphal Valley last night. More than 20 houses were gutted in the Motbang area of Kangpokpi district. Violence was also reported from Moreh near the Myanmar border in the Tengnoupal district. Around 1,000 Meites from the tribal-dominated Churdachandpur district have moved to different areas of the Bishnupur district, including Kwakta and Moirang.
Maiti community has a problem with illegal immigrants
The people's representatives of the valley had earlier supported the demand of some Meitei organizations for ST status, which had angered some of the communities included in the ST list. The Meitei community says that they are facing problems due to large-scale illegal immigration from Myanmar and Bangladesh.
