Five-time champions Mumbai Indians, currently languishing at the bottom of the points table, will face the Gujarat Titans in an IPL 2026 clash on Monday. Compared to Mumbai, Gujarat has enjoyed a much better run of form. In their previous match, Rohit Sharma and Mitchell Santner were sidelined due to injuries; however, ahead of the match against Gujarat, Mumbai’s bowling coach Paras Mhambrey has confirmed that both players are now fit and available for selection.

The Standings: A Tale of Two Teams

The Gujarat Titans began their campaign with two consecutive defeats, but they have since regained their momentum by winning three matches in a row, climbing to the sixth spot on the points table. In stark contrast, Mumbai started their season with a victory in their opening match, but their performance has steadily deteriorated since then. They have suffered four consecutive defeats—often by significant margins—causing them to slide down to the 10th position.

Why Has Mumbai’s Performance Been Poor?

Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma have been the mainstays of the Mumbai Indians’ middle order, yet neither player has managed to deliver the expected performance so far.

Although Suryakumar has scored one half-century, his performance has lacked consistency.

On the other hand, Tilak is in abysmal form, having managed to score a mere 43 runs across five innings.

Captain Hardik Pandya’s performance hasn’t been particularly impressive either; he has scored just 81 runs in four matches, further compounding Mumbai’s batting woes.

Mumbai’s problems are not limited solely to their batting; their bowlers, too, have failed to fire.

The fact that fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has yet to take a wicket remains a major cause for concern for the team. While he has bowled economically, opposition batsmen have opted to play him cautiously—avoiding unnecessary risks—and are playing him with relative ease.

Gujarat: Reliant on a Few Key Players

In contrast, despite facing their own set of challenges, the Gujarat Titans have managed to find ways to secure victories. Their batting still relies heavily on the top order, with captain Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler shouldering the responsibility for scoring the majority of the runs. Middle-order batsmen such as Glenn Phillips, Washington Sundar, and Rahul Tewatia have not yet delivered consistent performances. As for the bowling, the Gujarat Titans’ bowlers have performed well only in patches. Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada have often proved expensive, while the performances of Prasidh Krishna and Rashid Khan have been inconsistent.
