
As the month of April progresses, a continuous rise in temperature is being observed. According to the Meteorological Department, maximum temperatures in Northwest, Central, and East India are likely to witness a gradual increase of 3 to 6°C over the next 4 to 5 days. Temperatures are on the rise across North India, including the Delhi-NCR region. Even in mid-April, temperatures in several cities have already begun to reach the 40°C mark. In Northwest India, temperatures are expected to rise by 4 to 6 degrees between today—April 14—and April 18.
Mercury to Cross 40°C in Delhi-NCR
As for Delhi-NCR, maximum temperatures are projected to reach up to 41°C by April 17. This means that in the coming days, residents of North India may have to contend with scorching sunshine and intensifying heat. Over the past 24 hours, the highest maximum temperature in the country—43.1°C—was recorded in Akola (Maharashtra).
Heatwave Alert Issued for 8 States
According to the Meteorological Department, temperatures are steadily rising across India. Heatwave-like conditions are being observed earlier than usual across the Northern Plains, Western regions, and Central India. A heatwave alert has been issued for Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu for April 14, 15, and 16.
Maharashtra Government Issues SOP
To mitigate the risks associated with severe heat and heatwaves, the Maharashtra government has issued a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for outdoor workers, particularly those in the construction and other unorganized sectors. Under this SOP, instructions have been issued to suspend work between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM during ‘Orange’ or ‘Red’ alerts, and to reschedule working hours to the morning and evening slots. Additionally, employers have been directed to ensure the availability of shade and drinking water at all workplaces.
Possibility of Rain in These States
India is currently experiencing a dual impact of weather conditions. While North India is grappling with the severe onslaught of heat, the Meteorological Department has forecast the possibility of rain across large parts of Northeast India from April 14 to 17. From today until April 17, light to moderate rainfall is expected in Assam and Meghalaya, as well as in other northeastern states such as Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall is likely in certain parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya.
