On Monday morning, lakhs of youth took to the streets in Nepal. The anger of the youth was sparked by the recent decision of the Nepal government to ban social media, but the story of this movement was written a long time ago. There was only one face behind Nepal's Gen-Z movement - Sudan Gurung.
On one call of Sudan Gurung, lakhs of youth of Nepal took to the streets and demonstrated. 20 people were killed in these protests, while more than 200 were injured. But the youth of Nepal did not budge from their demands. First, the Home Minister of Nepal, then the Agriculture Minister, and then the Health Minister resigned.
Hami Nepal united the youth.
Nepal was already filled with anger against the corruption, economic inequality, and misgovernance prevalent in the system. The government's decision to ban social media added fuel to the fire of this anger. Sudan Gurung tried to bring the youth of Nepal onto one platform. Sudan's organization Hami Nepal describes itself as a non-profit organization, but this organization has a big role behind the Gen-Z movement.
Sudan Gurung used to work in event management earlier. Life revolved around parties. But the earthquake in Nepal in 2015 changed his life. Sudan Gurung immersed himself in humanitarian work and founded Hami Nepal. Now, Sudan Gurung had become an activist. His organization was active since 2015, but it was registered in 2020.
Sudan Gurung became the voice of the youth.
Hami Nepal made the voice of the youth of his country its issue and reached directly to their hearts. Sudan Gurung targeted the nepo babies and the elite class of the country. Calling for the September 8 movement, Sudan Gurung wrote on his Instagram post, 'Brothers and sisters. September 8 is the day when the youth of Nepal will rise up and say that enough is enough. This is our time, our fight, and it will start with us youth.'
The post read, 'We will raise our voice, clench our fists, we will show the power of unity, we will show our strength to those who take pride in not bowing down.' This post inspired the youth of Nepal, and on 8 September, the youth protested. The protesters coordinated using VPN and put their voice boldly in front of the Oli government.
