Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that his government has no option but to implement the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program to revive the cash-strapped economy.
The official Associated Press of Pakistan carried a report on Tuesday which quoted the PM as saying that Shahbaz Sharif regretted during a meeting that if the government wanted to give any subsidy in any sector, it would have to go to the IMF. He said that the coalition government never wanted to put the burden of price hikes on the people. The country had to implement the IMF program as it had no other option. During this, the Prime Minister targeted Imran Khan and said that the PTI government led by him had openly violated the agreement with the IMF.
Funding was stopped by IMF for non-fulfillment of conditions
Pakistan, which is facing a financial crisis, resumed the IMF program of US $ 6 billion this year. This was agreed upon in early 2019, but the Washington-based global lender's tough terms are proving difficult to meet. The report states that the IMF may not release more funds to Pakistan under the program until the promises made by the government are met.
The solution did not come out in the conversation of 18 November
On 18 November there was a formal dialogue between Pakistan and the IMF. But the schedule for formal talks on the overdue ninth review could not be finalized. The IMF board approved the seventh and eighth reviews of Pakistan's bailout program in August. During that time, permission was given to release funds of more than US$ 1.1 million.
