The Pakistan government on Tuesday approved the country's health ministry to purchase 6.2 million mosquito nets from India to protect the public from diseases after last month's devastating floods. Let us tell you that more than 1,600 people have died in Pakistan this year due to floods. "Malaria is spreading rapidly in 32 flood-affected districts of the country. Thousands of children are infected with mosquito-borne diseases here," The News International quoted Pakistan's health officials as saying.
Pakistani officials said the country's health ministry had to seek permission to procure mosquito nets from India last month due to the emergence of malaria in the flood-affected areas. "The Global Fund will provide financial resources to the World Health Organization (WHO) to purchase mosquito nets from India for flood-affected people in Pakistan," he said. Pakistani officials also said that they plan to get mosquito nets as soon as possible. It is expected that these will be received from Wagah Road by mid-November.
Last month, the World Health Organization expressed deep concern about the possibility of a second disaster in Pakistan due to the wave of diseases caused by the floods.
WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus said health centers were flooded. People have moved away from their homes. "The government is making arrangements for safe drinking water and toilets to reduce the risk of disease from dirty water," he said.
"US$816 million is urgently sought to meet people's life-saving needs," OCHA said in a statement.
