Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Sunday said that Parliament has made several laws ensuring social justice in recent years. The Indian Constitution has the spirit of treating all citizens as equal, giving them equal opportunities, and including the deprived and backward classes in the mainstream of progress.
Birla said these things in his address on the subject of parliamentary efforts for social development and justice at the 150th meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Birla said that our Parliament has taken measures to protect citizens of all sections of the country by making laws like the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016; the Protection of Transgender Persons Rights Act and a law reserving one-third of the seats for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies. Along with this, new labor laws have been made for the welfare and social security of workers in the unorganized sector.
