Just as the new year begins in the month of Chaitra in Hindu society, in the same way, Navroz marks the beginning of the new year in Parsi society. Navroz is derived from two Persian words Nav and Roz, which means new day. That is, the new year of the Parsi community begins with the festival of Navroz. The Iranian calendar also starts from this day. The new year of the Parsi community is known by many names like Pateti, Jamshedi Navroz, Nowroz, and Navroz. The rest of the last five days of the year are celebrated as Gatha. That is, in these five days all the family members remember their ancestors. The festival of Navroz has been celebrated in the Parsi community for the last three thousand years.

History of Navroz

According to beliefs, the people of the Parsi community celebrate the festival of Navroz in memory of King Jamshed of Persia. It is also said that on this day Jamdesh assumed the throne in Iran, that day was called Navroz in the Parsi community. Since then till today people celebrate this day as New Year.
