Shiv Sena leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut has got a big relief from the court. While hearing Raut's bail plea on Wednesday, the PMLA court in Mumbai granted him bail. Raut Patra has been in jail for a long time on charges of Chawl land scam.

Raut was arrested on August 1.

Raut was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on August 1 in a money laundering case related to alleged irregularities in the redevelopment of Patra 'Chawl' in Mumbai. He is currently in judicial custody. The ED probe is related to alleged financial irregularities of Rs 1,034 crore related to redevelopment of chawls or houses in suburban Goregaon and financial transactions allegedly related to his wife and associates.

What is Patra Chawl case?

Siddharth Nagar, known as Patra Chawl, is spread over 47 acres in suburban Goregaon and houses 672 tenant families. In 2008 the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) awarded a redevelopment contract for the chawl to Guru Ashish Construction Pvt Ltd (GACPL), a subsidiary of HDIL (Housing Development and Infrastructure Limited). GACPL was to construct 672 flats for the tenants and some flats to MHADA. The land was free to sell to private developers.

However, according to the ED, the tenants did not get a single flat in the last 14 years as the company did not redevelop Patra Chawl. It sold this land parcel and floor space index (FSI) for Rs 1,034 crore.
