Powered by a record 182-run partnership between Priyansh Arya (93) and Cooper Connolly (87), and bolstered by the lethal bowling of Marco Jansen, Punjab Kings (PBKS) secured a victory over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). In the match played on Sunday at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh, the Punjab team—having lost the toss and been put in to bat first—posted a total of 254 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
In reply, the Lucknow team could only manage to score 200 runs for the loss of five wickets within their allotted overs. Thus, the PBKS team achieved their fifth victory of the current season, while Lucknow suffered their third consecutive defeat.
Following their fourth defeat of the season, Lucknow captain Rishabh Pant appeared visibly disappointed. During the post-match presentation, he also revealed the strategy behind sending Ayush Badoni to open the innings.
A Major Error by Rishabh Pant
In fact, the Punjab team might never have reached a score of 254 runs in this match had it not been for a single error by Rishabh Pant—a mistake that ultimately sank the team’s ship and subsequently led to fans targeting Pant with criticism. The incident occurred during the second over of the innings, when Cooper Connolly missed an incoming delivery from Mohsin Khan, and the ball struck him directly on his pads.
Mitchell Marsh, stationed at the slip, was convinced that the batter was out and advised Pant to opt for a DRS review. However, in his capacity as both captain and wicketkeeper, Pant did not show much interest in the suggestion and decided against taking the review. Later, when the ball-tracking technology was displayed on the TV broadcast, it clearly indicated that Connolly was plumb out.
Consequently, Lucknow had to pay the price for Pant’s error throughout the entire match. Connolly—who could have been dismissed for a duck—capitalized on this lifeline to play a magnificent innings of 87 runs off just 46 balls, featuring 8 fours and 7 sixes.
What did Pant say after the match? Meanwhile, following the defeat in the match, when Pant was asked about the injury to his left elbow, he said, “I feel my arm is getting better now, but I picked up a new injury on my right hand today, so it seems I’ll have to deal with something new all over again (said with a smile).
Where did things go wrong?
Speaking about the defeat in the match, Pant remarked, “Look, it is a bit difficult to pinpoint a single reason for the loss, because the bowlers performed well; however, there are also certain aspects that require attention. Nevertheless, there were some positives for us that we can build upon. We saw glimpses of the batting approach we had discussed. There were certainly some positive takeaways that we can work on.”
What did he say about sending Ayush Badoni to open?
The Lucknow team was once again seen making a change to its opening pair. Against Punjab this time, Ayush Badoni opened the innings alongside Mitchell Marsh. Pant’s decision to send Badoni to open has come under scrutiny. Although Ayush certainly provided the team with a strong start by scoring 35 runs off 21 balls, the decision itself remains a hot topic of discussion. Speaking after the match, Pant shed light on the rationale behind having Ayush open the innings, stating:
“I feel the idea was simply to go out there and play with complete freedom. This wasn’t a decision taken just today; it had been decided beforehand that he would open. It was just something we kept under wraps. We wanted a bit more freedom in the top order, and the middle order simply wanted to contribute to that effort.” — Rishabh Pant.
Pant’s spirits remain high despite the defeat.
In his concluding remarks, Pant stated that they have complete faith in their team. However, he added that when the opposition is playing well—as Punjab is doing right now—they, too, deserve to be given credit.
