The government was uncomfortable with the overactivity of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on the impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Verma, but it had no idea that the matter would reach the resignation. The government was extremely angry with the way Dhankhar accepted the opposition's notice against Justice Yashwant Verma in the Rajya Sabha on Monday without any discussion. Due to this displeasure, Leader of the House JP Nadda and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stayed away from the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) called for the second time on Monday.
Sources said that due to poor health, Dhankhar was planning to resign for the last few months. Meanwhile, the government was also uncomfortable with his continuous attack on the judiciary and opening a sharp front on the matter of adding the words socialist and secular in the preamble of the Constitution. The government also did not agree with his sharp words on the issue of farmers on many occasions, but he was not asked to resign. According to sources, Dhankhar knew that the government was going to present a proposal against Justice Verma in the Lok Sabha to give a strong message on corruption in the judiciary. On the initiative of the government, a notice with the signatures of 152 MPs was also given to the Lok Sabha Speaker on Monday. Meanwhile, the notice given by the opposition in the Rajya Sabha and the decision of Chairman Dhankhar to accept it without any prior discussion had made the government restless and angry.
Why was there no activism in the Justice Yadav case?
A senior BJP leader said that the impeachment motion related to Justice Shekhar Yadav has been pending with the Vice President for months. It is being said repeatedly that the signatures of the MPs are being investigated. On Monday, he indicated that he could accept the notice in the Justice Yadav case as well. In such a situation, the government could not understand why Dhankhar was in a hurry in the case of Justice Verma. That too, when the notice of Rajya Sabha did not have the signature of even a single member of the ruling party. Apart from this, it was known that the government itself was bringing the proposal in the Lok Sabha.
Why did Nadda-Rijiju stay away from the meeting?
Two meetings of the BAC were held on Monday. As there was no decision on any subject in the first meeting, it was decided to call the second meeting at 4:30. However, before this, at around four o'clock, Dhankhar announced in the House that he had accepted the notice given by the opposition against Justice Verma. Government sources say that since there was no discussion on this, there was no question of attending the second meeting of the BAC. On the other hand, sources said that when Nadda and Rijiju did not appear in the second meeting of the BAC, Dhankhar raised the question. On this, BJP MP L Murugan informed him about their busy schedule. This angered Dhankhar, and he raised the question of why he was not informed about this.
Suspense remains on the reasons for resignation
However, suspense remains on why Dhankhar suddenly resigned, and why he made his resignation public through social media. On Tuesday, sources close to him said that he has resigned due to health reasons. After the resignation, a round of speculations started.
The opposition alleged that the resignation happened under pressure from the government, so Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished Dhankhar good health through social media 15 hours after the incident, so that the message does not go out that Dhankhar resigned under any pressure.
The impeachment process can start in Lok Sabha.
According to sources, now the acting chairman Harivansh will take a decision on the impeachment notice in Rajya Sabha. Since 152 MPs from all parties in Lok Sabha have given notice to this effect. In such a situation, the government can move forward with the impeachment process in the lower house. However, it will be interesting to see what will be the stand of the opposition now. If the process starts in Rajya Sabha, then the opposition will take all the credit in this matter.
