With the onset of the winter season in India, the air quality has started deteriorating again. The worst is in North India, where the AQI continues to be at an alarming level. Especially in the region of Delhi-NCR, it is difficult for people to breathe in the thick blanket of haze and smoke. However, this situation is not limited to Delhi only. If we look at the average figures, it is revealed that at present, pollution in India is at the highest level in the whole world. In most of the cities here, the AQI crossed 500 in the morning, which is also above the dangerous level.
Which cities in the world have the worst air quality?
Talking about the whole world, India is at the top among countries with poor air quality. Here the average AQI itself is above 500. Four cities in India are included in the top most polluted cities. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in these cities is consistently above harmful levels. Where the AQI is between 500 to 700 in different areas of Delhi. So at the same time, the AQI in Noida is at 519, in Faridabad at 515, and in Ghaziabad at 493.
China ranks second among countries with bad air. However, except for Baoding (AQI- 500), no city has an AQI of more than 200. Bangladesh, another neighbor of India, has become the fourth most polluted city in the world with an average AQI of 170. However, here too, apart from Paltan and Dhaka, nowhere does the AQI cross 200. Pakistan ranks fifth among countries with poor air conditions, with an average AQI of - 157. At present, the AQI of Lahore is 480 and that of Sharakpur Sharif is 247. In other cities, this figure is below 200.
Apart from Delhi-NCR, the top 10 cities with the worst air quality in India include Katihar and Arrah in Bihar. The Air Quality Index here stands at 350 and 448 respectively. Apart from this, pollution has also been recorded at a record level in Bhopal (AQI-468) of Madhya Pradesh, and Sirsa (AQI-412) in Haryana.
What is the reason for this level of pollution in North India?
Shockingly, most of the cities with poor air quality are in North India. According to the analysis, this period comes in northern India between the end of Diwali and the beginning of winter, when the air around Delhi and NCR is constantly polluted. Being surrounded by high-altitude areas in the north, east, west, and south, a large area of North India acts as a chamber at the beginning of winter. However, this period does not last long, due to which the air quality at the average level in the NCR region remains near normal.
