The Assam government is not imposing rules to control the population but is working towards population control by creating awareness among the people. Health Minister Keshav Mahant said in the assembly that by education and empowerment of women, important steps are being taken in this direction. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Hemang Thakuria raised the issue of the need for population control in the House.
Responding to this, Mahanta said, the state government had come out with the Assam Population Control and Women Empowerment Policy in 2017. It contains suggestions to deal with this issue. He said that the law for population control norms is also being prepared through extensive deliberations. Mahant said that it has been observed that the population growth has been high in areas with low female literacy rates. He said that the government is also emphasizing the education of women.
