Praveen Sood CBI: Praveen Sood appointed as the new director of CBI, has ties with Karnataka, and will have a tenure of two years

Praveen Sood has been appointed as the new director of CBI. Praveen Sood has been appointed for two years. Praveen Sood has also been the Chief of Police of Karnataka earlier. Praveen Sood will replace the current CBI director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, whose term has come to an end. The high-level committee headed by PM Modi finalized the name of Praveen Sood. Apart from PM Modi, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, and Leader of Opposition Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary were also included in this committee.

 

The names of three officers were shortlisted

The committee had shortlisted the names of three senior IPS officers. After that, these names were sent to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. This committee decided the name of the new chairman of CBI. The three names that were shortlisted were that of Karnataka DGP Praveen Sood, DG Fire Services, Civil Defense and Home Guards Taj Hasan, and Madhya Pradesh DGP Sudhir Kumar Saxena.

 

 

Sood is a 1986 batch IPS officer

Praveen Sood is a 1986 batch IPS officer. The current CBI Director Subodh Kumar was the Mumbai Police Commissioner and he became the CBI Director from Mumbai Police Commissioner. The tenure of the CBI director is two years but it can be extended up to five years. Praveen Sood is taking over as the CBI director at a time when the agency is probing several sensitive cases. These include cases like Pegasus spyware and scam in the purchase of medical equipment during the Corona epidemic.

 

Adhir Ranjan, who was included in the selection committee, opposed Praveen's name

Praveen Sood as the CBI director was selected by a three-member committee comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court DY Chandrachud, and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. PM Modi and Chief Justice Chandrachud agreed on the name of Praveen Sood, while Chaudhary objected to his name. The PM and the CJI agreed on his name based on seniority.

 

Shivkumar's allegations came into the limelight

Sood, who hails from Himachal Pradesh, was working as Karnataka DGP for three years. DGP Praveen Sood hit headlines in March when Karnataka Congress President Shivakumar alleged that he was registering cases against Congress leaders at the behest of the BJP government. He also demanded the arrest of Sood.
