Naveen Patnaik On Draupadi Murmu: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced his support for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu. Patnaik said, "There is an appeal to all the members of the Odisha Legislative Assembly to rise above the party line and unanimously support the daughter of Odisha, Draupadi Murmu for the highest post of the country."
Earlier on Tuesday, he expressed happiness over Murmu's nomination and said that it was a proud moment for the people of his state. He tweeted, "I am happy when Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji discussed this with me. It is indeed a proud moment for the people of Odisha." Patnaik said he was sure that Murmu "will set an example for women empowerment in the country".
In the last presidential election, BJP had nominated Dalit leader Ram Nath Kovind as its candidate and this time it has tried to send a message to the society by making a tribal leader a candidate for this post. BJP president JP Nadda announced Murmu's name after a meeting of the party's parliamentary board, which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior leaders.
