Indian President Droupadi Murmu will begin a two-day visit to Manipur on Thursday. During her visit, she will attend an event commemorating the women's struggle against British rule and will likely offer prayers at the famous Shri Govindaji Temple in Manipur. This is President Murmu's first visit to Manipur since assuming office. Her visit comes three months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the state in September 2025.
What events will President Murmu attend?
President Droupadi Murmu will first attend a polo event organised by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports at the Imphal Polo Ground in the afternoon. Following this, she will likely offer prayers at the Shri Govindaji Temple, a major centre of Vaishnavism in Manipur. In the evening, she will attend a civic reception at the City Convention Center and will stay at the Lok Bhavan overnight.
On Friday, she will participate in the Nupi Lan ceremony. This ceremony is held annually to commemorate the women's movements against British rule in 1904 and 1939. She may also attend an event in the Naga-dominated Senapati district.
Security tightened amid bandh call.
Security has been tightened in Manipur ahead of the President's visit. This is because several insurgent groups and banned organisations have called for a bandh (strike) in protest against the visit. As a result, markets and schools and colleges in the Imphal Valley are closed, and the roads are deserted. Several posters and temporary entry gates have also been erected at the locations the President will be visiting.
What are the demands of the local organisation?
The Meitei organization Arambai Tenggol (AT) in Manipur has appealed to the President to address the problems of internally displaced persons and implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The organisation says that many displaced families are living in difficult conditions despite central government schemes. They demand that all rights and benefits be ensured to them in a fair and transparent manner. They also emphasised the need to address illegal cross-border movement and implement the NRC.
