Srinagar, Jan 21 (IANS) Clashes erupted Wednesday here in the Jammu and Kashmir capital when protesters pelted stones at security forces, police said.
"Groups of youths pelted stones and clashed with security forces in Maisuma and Gaw Kadal areas of the city this afternoon," a police officer said.
He said the security forces "exercised maximum restraint while dealing with the mob", but had to resort to baton-charge and fire tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.
The situation was fast returning to normal in the area, the police officer said.
The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) had called for a general shutdown, protesting the firing in Gaw Kadal by security forces this day in 1990. JKLF chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik led a commemoration rally in Gaw Kadal.
