Bollywood actor-comedian Rajpal Yadav is currently serving his sentence in Tihar Jail in a debt case. He finally surrendered in this long-running check-bounce case and is now serving his sentence. So, let's find out if he won't have to repay the debt after serving his sentence.
What's the whole matter?
First, let's understand the entire matter. In 2010, Rajpal Yadav took a loan of ₹5 crore from Delhi-based Murali Project Private Limited to make a film. The film, titled "Aata Pata Lapata," was a flop. It grossed approximately ₹37 crore at the box office, resulting in Rajpal losing money. He was subsequently unable to repay the loan.
He was also jailed in 2018.
He had issued 7 checks to repay the debt, all of which bounced, and the case subsequently went to the legal court. In 2018, Rajpal Yadav and his wife were convicted under Section 138 and sentenced to six months in prison. However, the actor later received bail.
Will the debt be forgiven?
By 2024, the debt had grown to ₹9 crore. The court granted several timeframes for settlement, but the actor still failed to make the payment. The court took a firm stance, and on February 5, 2026, the actor surrendered in Tihar Jail. Now, the question arises: will Rajpal's debt be forgiven after serving his sentence?
The answer is no. Legally, Rajpal will have to repay the ₹9 crore after serving his sentence or settle the case. There are two types of punishments for check bounce cases: criminal (jail sentence and penalty) and civil liability (principal, interest, and damages). This means that even after serving his sentence, Rajpal will still have to repay the loan. At the same time, if they pay the outstanding amount, their sentence can also be suspended.
