West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has sent flowers and sweets to Tarique Rahman for his landslide victory in Bangladesh's 13th national parliamentary election, state government sources said on Sunday. Banerjee greeted the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader as "Tariq Bhai" and extended her best wishes to the neighboring country ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.
According to government sources, Banerjee called Tarique Rahman on Saturday evening and congratulated him on his party's victory. Sources said the gifts were received by BNP media cell member Atiqur Rahman Ruman and other senior officials.
Earlier, Mamata Banerjee congratulated the party in a Facebook post, "My heartfelt congratulations, Shubhonadan, to all the brothers and sisters of Bangladesh, to all the people. Advance Ramadan greetings to all of you. Congratulations to Tarique-bhai, his party, and all parties for this resounding victory. I pray that you all remain healthy and happy. I wish that our relations with Bangladesh always remain cordial."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Rahman on the BNP's decisive victory in a Facebook post. He posted, "It was a great pleasure to speak to Tarique Rahman. I congratulated him on this remarkable victory in the Bangladesh elections. I conveyed my best wishes and support in his efforts to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Bangladesh."
Prime Minister Modi said, "As two close neighbours with deep historical and cultural ties, I reaffirm India's continued commitment to the peace, progress, and prosperity of the people of both countries." Voting for the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election and referendum concluded on Thursday. On Friday, the Bangladesh Election Commission declared official results for 297 out of 300 seats.
