Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes Shreyas Iyer, who left his mark as the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, is a natural leader. Shreyas was given the responsibility of captaining KKR before IPL 2022. Under his captaincy, the team has won three matches, while they had to face defeat in the same number of matches.
Former India coach Ravi Shastri claims that Shreyas will get better as a captain as the tournament progresses. Shastri said on Star Sports, “Captaincy is a natural thing for Shreyas (Iyer). Look at his aggressive captaincy, you would not think that he is leading KKR for the first time. It seems that he has been leading the team for the last three or four seasons and that is reflected in his clarity of thought.
The former all-rounder said, "It is clear in his mind what kind of cricket he needs to play as a batsman. Also, he knows that as a captain he has to take his team to the playoffs and then win the title. I liked the way he spoke in the pre-match and post-match press conferences and it shows that he is very clear about the plan. I am sure he will come a long way as captain.
Former West Indies cricketer Ian Bishop also supported Ravi Shastri's point. Bishop backed Shreyas as captain and said that he has a good mind and also has the support and support of some experienced players in KKR. Bishop said, “I think Shreyas can come back strongly with his team, despite having suffered two defeats in a row. When he became the captain of the Delhi Capitals, he went on getting better and better season after season.
He further said, “It will take some time for him to establish a foothold in KKR, but for this, he has the support and support of some experienced players of the team. Andre Russell and Sunil Narine are experienced players. Coach Brendon McCullum is also very experienced. So according to me, there is no doubt that Shreyas will not be able to take his team forward.
