After the defeat in the ODI series, Team India is going to play a two-Test series against Bangladesh today. Both these matches are very important for India to reach the final of the World Test Championship to be held in June next year.
Further in this story, we will know what is the position of all the teams including India in the points table of the World Test Championship. We will also know which teams are currently in the race to reach the finals and what India needs to do to finish in the top 2.
Apart from these, we will also see how the points are decided for this table and on what basis the ranking of the teams is decided.
First, let's see the latest points table
Before seeing how points are received, let us know what is WTC
The International Cricket Council started the World Test Championship to make Test matches more exciting. Top-9 teams were included in this. Every team has to play three series at home and three series away from home in two years. After the scheduled series of all the teams is over, the top 2 teams reach the finals.
WTC was organized for the first time between 2019 and 2021. Then the teams of India and New Zealand reached the finals. In the final held in Southampton, England, New Zealand defeated India to become Test champions for the first time. Right now the matches of the second World Test Championship are going on.
India's points were calculated like this
India has 75 points from 12 matches. India has won 6 matches. He has got defeated in 4 and 2 matches are drawn. In this way, India got 72 points for 6 wins and 8 points for 2 draws. This means the total points of Team India should have been 80, but now our team has only 75 points.
Why so? This has happened because the Indian team has been penalized 5 points due to a slow over-rate. In this way, Team India has only 80-5 = 75 points. India has 52.08% percentage points. Let us understand further what are percentage points and how they are calculated.
The ranking is decided by percentage points and not by total points
When the ranking of the teams are prepared, then the decision is not made by the total points. Percentage points are calculated for ranking. You can see in the above table that Australia's total points are 108, but their percentile points are only 75. Similarly, India's total points are 75, but the percentage points are 52.08.
Things may sound complicated, but they are quite simple. There is a solid logic behind preparing rankings based on percentage points. This is the reason to give equal opportunity to all the teams.
How? Let's understand…
In a WTC, each team has to play 6 series. But, the number of matches in each team's series is not fixed. There are only 2 Test matches in a series and 5 Test matches in a series. In such a situation, if the ranking is made based on total points, then those teams which play more test matches will get more benefits. To avoid this situation, ICC decided to give weightage to percentage points for ranking.
How to calculate percentage points
We all have learned to calculate percentages in school. Percentage means percentage. Calculating the percentage in the WTC points table also needs the same basic skills learned during school days.
The percentage points of a team in WTC means how many points a team has scored out of the maximum points possible for it. Like we sit in an exam and suppose the total marks of the exam are 500. We get only 400 marks out of 500. So let's say I got 80% marks.
India has played 12 Test matches so far in the ongoing WTC. You get 12 points from a win in 1 match. That is, a maximum of 12 * 12 = 144 points could be obtained from 12 Test matches. India has secured 75 of these points.
Convert it to percentage points like this
India scored 75 out of 144 points
This Means India gets 75/144 points out of every 1 point
In this way out of 100 points, India got 75/144*100 points
If you calculate this, you will get a figure of 52.08. This is India's highest percentage point so far. The percentage points of all the teams can be calculated in the same way.
