The sixth match of IPL 2025 between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday became special. The second ball rule was used for the first time in this match. Rajasthan Royals became the first team to use the second ball rule in IPL 2025.
Rajasthan Royals' acting captain Riyan Parag demanded a change of ball in the 17th over of KKR's innings. However, his team failed to take advantage of it. Rajasthan Royals had to face their second consecutive defeat. Royals lost to KKR by eight wickets.
What is the second ball rule?
The second ball rule has been introduced this season to reverse the effect of dew in evening matches. Teams can demand a change of ball after the 10th over of the second innings. However, the decision will depend entirely on the umpires as to what will be the condition of the ball to be changed. A new ball will be provided or it will be replaced with a ball in the same condition as it was in 10 overs.
While the aim of making this rule was to give equal chance to both the teams in the match, it has received mixed reactions from fans and former cricketers. Some said that this has reduced the advantage of teams chasing the target on a dewy pitch, while some believe that it has harmed the natural rhythm of the game.
The rule change made little difference for Rajasthan Royals as KKR easily achieved the target without any hindrance.
Kock played a brilliant innings.
In the absence of Sunil Narine, Quinton de Kock played a brilliant innings and gave Kolkata Knight Riders a huge victory. While most batsmen were seen struggling on the Barsapara Stadium pitch, de Kock took advantage of his experience with a calm nature and took rest only after giving victory to the team.
With this win, KKR opened its account in IPL 2025. This was KKR's first win under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane. KKR lost to RCB in the opening match of IPL 2025.
