IND vs NZ: Tilak Varma's health suddenly deteriorated, requiring surgery; he is certain to miss the New Zealand series.

The Indian team has suffered a major setback ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Tilak Varma, the hero of the T20 Asia Cup final and a key middle-order batsman, suddenly complained of pain this morning. Tests confirmed testicular torsion, and following the doctors' advice, he underwent successful surgery immediately.

Currently, his condition is stable, but he is likely to miss the T20I series against New Zealand. An official announcement is expected soon. The five-match T20I series against New Zealand is scheduled to begin on January 21st.

Tilak Varma's Successful Surgery

The 23-year-old left-handed batsman, Tilak Varma, was playing for his domestic team Hyderabad in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Rajkot. This morning, January 7th, after breakfast, he suddenly experienced severe abdominal pain. He was immediately taken to a hospital in Rajkot, where several scans were performed. The reports were later sent to the doctors at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru.

According to a BCCI source:

"Tilak experienced severe abdominal pain. After reviewing the scan reports, the doctors advised surgery.  It may take three to four weeks for Tilak to fully recover after the surgery.  Therefore, his chances of playing in the entire T20 series against New Zealand seem slim." - BCCI source.

The Indian team management is now considering a replacement for Tilak, although reports suggest Shubman Gill is not the frontrunner for the spot. The team management would prefer to give an opportunity to a player who can make an immediate impact in the middle order.

Tilak's injury could also affect India's preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup. If he has undergone surgery, he might miss the initial matches of the tournament. India will play their first Group A match against the USA in Mumbai on February 7th, followed by a match against Namibia in Delhi on February 12th. The high-voltage India-Pakistan match will be played in Colombo on February 15, while the match against the Netherlands will be held in Ahmedabad on February 18.
