Seizure: 1,137 kg of banned raw sea cucumber seized, worth Rs 5.11 crore

About 1,137 kg of banned raw sea cucumber, estimated to be worth Rs 5.11 crore, dumped in the sea near Mandapam in Ramanathapuram district was seized, the Indian Coast Guard said on Thursday. This is the second big catch by the ICG near Mandapam in the last two months. Earlier, on May 10, the Indian Coast Guard had seized around 260 kg of banned sea cucumbers from Ediyarvalsai beach.

 

Sea cucumbers are single-branched marine creatures and their collection/trade is prohibited under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, of 1972. Acting quickly on the information, the ICG deployed its rapid response team by boat to seal the location, said a release issued here. A Coast Guard spokesperson said, “Coast Guard response teams with the help of trained divers launched an extensive search operation in the area. Around 67 gunny bags, allegedly thrown into the water by smugglers, were recovered near Vedalai beach, south of Mandapam town.
