Today is the 396th birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. A large crowd gathered at Shivaji's birthplace in Shivneri, Maharashtra. Chaos and a stampede ensued, injuring several people, including women and children. Police personnel made every effort to control the situation.

Crowds had gathered at Shivneri Fort since late last night. People began arriving at Shivneri Fort late last night for Shivaji Jayanti. The crowds continued to grow, leading to a sudden panic. Police attempted to control the crowds and improve facilities, but the overwhelming number of people worsened the situation.

Lack of adequate police force worsened the situation.

According to reports, the situation arose due to the lack of an adequate police force to handle the growing crowd at Shivneri Fort in the Junnar taluka of the district. During this time, a large crowd suddenly gathered in the Hathi Darwaza area below the Ambarkhana and on several narrow paths, such as the Ganesh Darwaza, causing chaos. Several women and children were injured in the incident.

Questions raised about the police administration's preparedness

Every year, a large number of people gather at Shivneri Fort on Shiva Jayanti. Despite this, the lack of adequate preparations to control the crowds has raised questions about the administration's functioning. Regarding this stampede, local residents say that for such large events, access routes, security cordons, and adequate police deployment should be established in advance to prevent such incidents from occurring again.

Police denied any stampede. Regarding the incident, Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Sandeep Singh Gill said, "If you look at the Shiva Janmasthan located atop the Shivneri Fort in Junnar, a large number of people have been coming for darshan since yesterday morning and continued throughout the night... One devotee slipped, causing more people to fall on the stairs, injuring three of them. There was no stampede."
