The contest between Indian-origin Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss has intensified for the post of Britain's new Prime Minister. Initially, Sunak had the support of 137 MPs from his Conservative Party. Liz Truss was able to garner the support of only 113 lawmakers. Now about 2 lakh permanent members of the Conservative Party will vote in the final. Only then will the new Prime Minister be elected.
96 percent of the party's permanent members are white. A recent YouGov poll by the Conservative Party gives Truss a 28 percent lead over Sunak. Truss got 58 percent while Sunak got only 30 percent votes. Sunak seems to be lagging in support of the party's permanent members. Political experts say that in the coming times also the difference between Sunak and Truss is going to remain the same. According to another survey, 6 out of every 10 party members are with the truss.
Sunak's image became that of Johnson's throne grabber
Now Sunak and Truss are going among the members of the Conservative Party to ask for votes. It's called Hastings. In such hastings in Exeter, Cardiff, and Eastbourne, Sunak's image is being created among party members as a leader longing to seize power by betraying former Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
By the way, members of the Conservative Party avoid making their opinions public. But one member said that Sunak is believed to be the main reason for Johnson's loss of power. It was Sunak who started the rebellion against Johnson by resigning. Most party members do not consider Johnson's mistakes to be the reason for his downfall. They blame Rishi Sunak for this.
21% of the white members belong to the orthodox English Heritage Trust, a big challenge for Sunak to cultivate them
Of the 96 percent white members of the Conservative Party, 21 percent belong to the conservative English Heritage Trust. It is difficult to get their support for Sunak. Experts say that after the support of the MPs, these white members are the real reason behind Sunak's lagging behind. 68% of Conservative Party members are over the age of 50. Most of these prefer to vote for the white candidate.
