A petition related to the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata was heard in the Supreme Court. During this, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) presented a status report regarding the investigation of the case. The Bengal government has also submitted a status report to the court. During the hearing, senior advocate Kapil Sibal told the Supreme Court that the West Bengal government has filed a status report. It states that when the doctors were not working, 23 people died.
The Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the matter and heard it on Monday. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Mishra heard the case. On August 22, the court expressed displeasure with the Kolkata Police over the delay in registering a case of unnatural death of a female doctor. The trainee PG doctor of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was raped and murdered.
The court had called it a very disturbing incident. The court had raised questions on the timing of the incident and procedural formalities. The apex court had constituted a 10-member National Task Force (NTF) to prepare a protocol for the safety of doctors and other healthcare workers. The court had also termed the incident as horrific and expressed displeasure with the state government over the delay in filing an FIR.
