The news of the death of film star Sushant Singh Rajput has once again made public the discussion on the subject of mental health.
Such speculations are being made and it is also discussed that due to the long lockdown, many people may be going through depression due to the many insecurities that have gone home.
During the last three months, many people may have also felt insecure because their job has gone away, salary cuts or their job has been damaged, while some families may have to suffer the loss of someone's life in the family. There is also a large cause of insecurity.
Even if people were lucky that they did not go to their jobs or did not face pay cuts, many people still faced loneliness due to the complete lockout and ban on movement.
But the problem of mental health is discussed only when the news of the suicide of a high profile person comes in the knowledge of everyone.
Mental health status in India
The sad thing is that focusing on mental health problems in India is much less than the result of this problem in India.
The problem is that many people do not realize that they are suffering from depression, but the even bigger problem is that people who know about their illness, do not discuss it with other people. Do not want to go or see a doctor for consultation.
Nearly a year ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of mental health in a 'Mann Ki Baat' program and asked people to openly talk about depression and mental health issues.
PM Modi had even said that 'the first mantra to fight depression is that you talk about this problem, make it open and express it, do not sit under it.' This is very important advice.
Now people are speaking openly?
When the Prime Minister spoke on this issue, there was some discussion on this subject for some time. But soon this discussion aired among us.
But now this discussion has not only started again with the suicide of Sushant Singh Rajput, but people are now living in the past, they are also telling about their depression.
Former Indian Union Minister and Congress Party leader Milind Deora has spoken openly about how he had thoughts of suicide and he has told about five ways in which depression can be fought.
Depression - This is not just a word, but should also become a matter of concern. But when celebrities suffer from it, then it only appears as a problem.
According to the report of the World Health Organization, about 6.5% of Indians in India suffer from some form of depression.
According to this report, India has been ranked above China and America in the category of most depressed countries in the world.
Depression is highest among students in the age group of 15-24 but this does not mean that people of other age groups do not suffer from depression.
But the bigger problem than the problem of depression is that it is not talked about openly in Indian society.
What should people with depression do?
Milind Deora has mentioned that those who are struggling with depression should talk to their family, friends, colleagues, and acquaintances.
He also told that people should know about mental health and counseling should also be done.
Unfortunately, it is still seen as a stigma even today and people do not want to share it with anyone that they are mentally ill and in such a situation, they even take steps like suicide.
When Sushant Singh Rajput commits suicide, it becomes even more important to pay attention to this problem because it is not the only cause, but such cases are increasing in India.
According to data from the National Crime Research Bureau (NCRB), 10,159 students committed suicide in the year 2018.
Suicide rates have increased in India. In the year 2017, 9,905 students committed suicide, while in the year 2016 the number of such cases was 9,478.
How serious is the state of mental health in India?
Lokniti-CSDS had surveyed in 2016, which revealed that four out of every ten young people are suffering from depression, which is the biggest reason behind loneliness.
This study also revealed that 6 percent of the youth believed that they had thought of committing suicide at least once in the last few years.
This situation is worse than it seems.
Due to the stigma associated with mental health, people hesitate to go to the doctors and this ideology cannot be changed in one night.
After the death of Sushant Singh Rajput, many awareness campaigns were conducted, but people will take time to accept depression as a disease.
Even if social change takes time, people suffering from depression should come forward to seek help and put their point in front of their loved ones.
By doing this, cases of suicide in India can be reduced which has increased continuously in the last decade.
