On Wednesday, a dispute broke out at the South Asian University (SAU) in Delhi over serving vegetarian and non-vegetarian food in the same mess on Mahashivratri.
The Students Federation of India (SFI) has accused the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) of assault, although the ABVP has denied the assault. It has called it an attempt to spoil religious harmony.
Hands were twisted and hair was dragged.
Yashada, the mess secretary at SAU, has alleged that she was beaten up. She said that some ABVP-supported students had opposed serving non-vegetarian food on Mahashivratri. When she talked about serving food in the mess, as usual, she was beaten up. Hands were twisted and hair was dragged. The mess staff attacked her. She immediately called the police. A complaint has been lodged.
A demand was made to make separate arrangements for fruits.
On the other hand, the ABVP has called all the allegations baseless. ABVP said that when the manager was discussed, 110 students said that they wanted to fast food. Accepting this demand of the students, the university administration arranged satvik food in one of the two messes. There was a demand for separate arrangements for fruits, but non-vegetarian food was served along with vegetarian food in the mess.
The university administration had arranged for satvik food in the mess.
When we protested, we were stopped and some students were beaten up. Non-vegetarian food fell on many students who were fasting. This hurt their religious sentiments. ABVP Delhi's state minister Sarthak Sharma said that every student has the right to follow his religious beliefs and traditions and this should be respected. When the university administration had arranged for satvik food in the mess, trying to forcibly serve non-vegetarian food in it was not only insensitive but also ideological terrorism.
ABVP strongly condemns this act and demands that the administration take strict action against the goons who resorted to violence to spoil the cordial atmosphere and hurt the religious sentiments of the fasting students.
