Unemployment: Unemployment in cities is at one-year high, 7.18 percent in villages in 15 days of August

The unemployment rate in urban areas has reached 9.35 percent in the first 15 days of this month. This is the highest since August 2021. The unemployment rate at that time was 9.78 percent. The unemployment rate in villages has been 7.18 percent this month. However, it was at 8.03 percent in June and 6.14 percent in July.

 

According to the latest data from the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy, the unemployment rate in the country stood at 8.32 percent in August 2021 and then again crossed eight percent in February this year. At that time, the unemployment rate in villages was also at the highest level in a year, beyond eight percent. The lowest unemployment rate in the entire country the last year was in January this year.

 

Rates above eight percent in cities since July 25

 

Since July 25 this year, the unemployment rate in urban areas has been above 8 percent every day. It has not decreased on any day in the last 21 days. On 16 August it went up to 9.44%. The unemployment rate in villages has been over 6 percent since July 27. It has increased continuously since July 24 across the country. There was only a slight decrease on August 1.

 

47% drop in employment under NREGA

 

MGNREGA employment declined by 47 percent in August as compared to July. According to the data, the total number of workers in July stood at 222 million per day, which was 422 million per day in June.
