After two years of efforts, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday created history by laying the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Uttarakhand Bill 2022 on the table of the Assembly. Uttarakhand has become the first state in the country to present the bill in the House. According to the provision in the bill, equal rights in property are given to sons and daughters, and children born in live-in relationships are also considered entitled to property. UCC will not apply to people belonging to the Scheduled Tribe community. After presenting the bill in the House, the CM said that there would be no impact on the religious beliefs, customs, food habits, worship, and dress of marriage in UCC.
On Tuesday, after adjourning all the business of the House, the government brought the 202-page UCC Bill to the House. The House adjourned at around 6.30 pm. After discussion, the bill is likely to be passed on Wednesday. During the discussion, the ruling party MLAs praised the Dhami government, while Leader of Opposition Yashpal Arya and another opposition member raised the demand of sending it to the Select Committee for reconsideration. Before this, CM Dhami reached the Assembly with the Constitution book in his hands. During this, Leader of Opposition Yashpal Arya and Congress member Pritam Singh raised a point of order that the bill is being introduced, but they have not received a copy of the bill. He asked the Speaker to give him time to study the bill.
