US President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% additional tax on goods coming from India. This tax has been imposed by India on buying oil from Russia. After this decision, a total of 50% tax will be levied on goods going from India to the US market. In such a situation, rhetoric has also increased in India regarding this matter. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has given a strong reaction to this matter. He called this move of America unfair and a double standard. He also said that America itself is ordering many things from Russia, but is targeting India.
This was not expected from America - Tharoor.
The Congress MP said that America has given a 90-day exemption to China, while it buys much more Russian oil than we do. He said that this is not a sign of friendship. We did not expect this from America. Tharoor called this decision unfair, unjust, and unnecessary. He also said that America is adopting a double standard with India.
Let us tell you that on August 6, US President Donald Trump signed an order, after which a total of 50% tax will now be levied on goods imported from India. He gave reasons related to national security and foreign policy behind this, especially regarding India's oil imports from Russia.
Demand for retaliatory tax may intensify - Tharoor.
Tharoor also indicated that now the demand for imposing retaliatory tax on American goods in India may intensify. He said that America itself is buying things like uranium and palladium from Russia. We should now learn a lesson from this and take steps accordingly.
Tharoor told us how our exports will be affected.
Along with this, Tharoor said that due to a 50% tax, Indian goods will now become very expensive in America. He said that if our competitor countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, Bangladesh, and Pakistan have lower taxes, then American people will buy cheaper goods from there. This will harm our exports.
Tharoor's suggestion - Emphasis on finding new markets
Along with this, in response to Trump's tariff, Tharoor suggested that India should now turn its trade relations towards other countries. He said that we have signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the UK. Talks are going on with the European Union (EU). We should look for new markets.
The Ministry of External Affairs criticized it.
Apart from this, the Ministry of External Affairs of India has also strongly criticized this move by America. The ministry said that this decision is very unfortunate. It is against the spirit of our strategic relations. In a statement issued by the ministry, it was said that India's oil purchase is according to the needs and it is related to the energy security of 1.4 billion people.
