US President Donald Trump has imposed an additional 25% tax on goods coming from India. This tax has been imposed by India on buying oil from Russia. After this decision, a total of 50% tax will be levied on goods going from India to the US market. In such a situation, rhetoric has also intensified in India regarding this matter. In this connection, Congress National President and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday called the decision of US President Donald Trump to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods a major failure of the foreign policy of the central government.
Kharge said that Trump's move has come at a time when India's diplomacy looks weak and confused. He alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has completely failed to deal with this crisis, and now Trump is pressurizing India. Let us tell you that this whole matter started when Donald Trump, expressing displeasure over India's continued purchase of oil from Russia, imposed an additional 25% duty on many products coming from India. Already, a 25% tariff was applicable, due to which the total duty has now become 50%. This order has come into effect from 7 August.
Sarcasm on PM Modi
Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge took a dig at PM Narendra Modi and said that you could not make a trade agreement with America. Your ministers were talking about talks for months, and some were camping in Washington. Despite this, nothing happened, and now this big blow has come, but you are silent. He said that this time, you cannot even put the responsibility of this foreign policy failure on the Congress governments of the past 70 years.
Questions raised on PM Modi's silence
Kharge has raised questions on PM Narendra Modi's silence in the matter by posting on the social media platform X. He said that the Modi government could not make any trade agreement with America despite more than six months. He said that Trump is now threatening and pressurizing India, but Modi ji is silent. Kharge said that PM Modi did not say anything even when Trump called BRICS dead in 2024 and threatened a 100% tariff.
Expressed concern over the economic impact
Along with this, Kharge also expressed concern about the economic situation and America's tariff policy. He said that India's exports to America are about ₹ 7.51 lakh crore (2024). A 50% tariff will put an economic burden of about ₹ 3.75 lakh crore on India. He said that agriculture, MSME, dairy, engineering, electronics, gems and jewellery, medicines, petroleum, and textile industries will be affected the most by this.
