North India, including the national capital, may have seen sunshine on the first day of the year, but there are chances of dense fog and a severe cold wave this week. According to the Meteorological Department, most of the areas of northwestern India will be under the grip of Shilhar, while dense fog will remain in Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh for the next two-three days. Along with some areas of these states, there is a possibility of more cold in the western part of Madhya Pradesh for the next two days.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), fog is common at this time due to light winds and high moisture near the surface in the Indo-Gangetic plains. Due to the westerly winds from Himachal, the minimum temperature is likely to drop by 2-4 degrees over the plains of North India, Northwest, and adjoining Central India during the next two days.

Under its influence, cold to very cold winds can blow in the northern areas of Rajasthan till Tuesday. Last week, Delhi and surrounding areas got some respite from the severe cold wave. Except for the last days of December, last week most areas of North India did not feel much cold during the day. There was relief from the dense fog as well. The Meteorological Department said that there was some relief from the cold due to the Western Disturbance.

Seven Western Disturbances in December:

According to the IMD, seven cases of western disturbance were reported in December. Of these, six had a weak effect, and only one (28-30 December) had a strong effect. Due to this, the higher reaches of Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand received the first snowfall of this season in the last three days of December.

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said on Saturday, if there is a sign of a reduction in rainfall, it means that the activity of Western Disturbance is also likely to reduce. If there is a lesser Western Disturbance, then the effect of the winds blowing from the north to the west can remain in Northwest India.
