The mercury dropped to minus 7.5 degrees Celsius in Himachal's Kukumseri while it was minus 6.2 degrees in Pahalgam. Due to snowfall in the mountains, cold waves continued throughout the day on Tuesday in the national capital and surrounding areas. Director General of India Meteorological Department (IMD) Dr. Mrityunjay Mohapatra said that the night temperature is expected to fall further between January 5 and 11. Due to its effect, the cold wave situation in Central India may become serious. Cold day conditions may arise due to low day temperatures in Madhya Pradesh, the northern part of Maharashtra, and the southern part of Uttar Pradesh.
Visibility is lowest in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh
IMD said moderate to dense fog was observed over some other parts of North India including Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday. Due to fog late Tuesday evening, visibility was very low in many areas. Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh had the lowest visibility at 25. "Moderate to dense fog is observed over Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh adjoining East Rajasthan, central parts of Uttar Pradesh, South Assam, and Tripura," the IMD wrote in a post on Twitter.
Mercury below zero in most districts of Kashmir
All water sources including Dal Lake have frozen in Jammu and Kashmir. Kashmir Valley is in the grip of severe cold due to heavy snowfall on the high peaks of the mountains.
