After the Russian attack on Ukraine on 24 February, Western countries announced drastic sanctions for its siege. India was also warned that there could be consequences if New Delhi buys oil from Moscow. It has been more than four months since the war started, and there is no hope of stopping it. In such a situation, the tone of America and its allies seems to be changing.
Not only was Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited this week to the G-7 summit, but it was also said that India does not need to select any side. The changed attitude of Western countries shows how India has capitalized on its geopolitical position.
India has always been projecting itself as the voice of poor countries. India argues that Western sanctions have hurt developing countries the most. Also, to control rising inflation, he defended buying crude oil from Russia.
Energy is not the privilege of the rich
Addressing the G-7 countries in Germany, Modi said – You all will also agree that the use of energy should not be the privilege of the rich only – a poor family also has equal rights on energy. Today, when oil prices are skyrocketing due to geopolitical tensions, it becomes all the more important to keep this in mind.
Now the US wants to increase global pressure against Russia, it cannot even afford to isolate allies like India. It needs an ally like India as a counterweight on issues like China.
America does not want to take India away from Russia
Ahead of the G7 summit, US National Security Council coordinator John Kirby described India as \"a key strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific\". He said that America does not want to take India away from Russia.
China is spreading the web of \'One Belt and One Road Initiative\' to strengthen its hold around the world. In response, the US has spoken of an international infrastructure program worth 60 billion rupees. The US President says that India will be among the first beneficiaries of this program.
America\'s architecture is not possible without India
Pratyush Rao, director of Consultancy Control Risk, says that the kind of architecture that America wants to create in the Indo-Pacific is not possible without India. This is the reason that even after Biden\'s appeal not to buy oil from Russia in March, India doubled its imports. He also procured weapons on a large scale.
India has bought 76 million barrels of crude oil from Russia at 30% below global market prices. India is defending this deal by talking about relief from inflation for its poor population. India\'s Petroleum Minister, Hardeep Singh Puri says that we are yet to recover from a pandemic. Even after this, they are giving free facilities to lakhs of people and are also giving subsidies on vaccination. We have to take care of our interests.
Like India, other countries are also in favor of buying oil from Russia.
Like India, some other countries in South Asia also want to stay neutral and buy cheaper oil from Russia. Because of this, the Sri Lankan minister will also visit Russia. Sri Lanka\'s Health Minister says that we will do everything possible to meet the needs of our citizens.
Western countries are now beginning to feel that because of its sanctions, other countries have suffered more than Russia. Skyrocketing energy prices have allowed Russia to increase earnings from oil. Now America is looking for new ways to control Russia.
India exposed the hypocrisy of western countries
India has on several occasions exposed the hypocrisy of Western countries on the purchase of oil from Russia. Western countries want the world not to do any kind of trade with Russia, while they are importing natural gas from Russia on a large scale. According to the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air, three-quarters of what Russia earned from natural gas in the first 100 days of the war came from Europe.
India\'s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said in Slovakia earlier this month that \"Europe has to get out of the mindset that Europe\'s problems are the world\'s problems, but the world\'s problems are not Europe\'s problems.\"
