The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the petitions demanding a stay on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The court will hear these petitions on March 19.
IUML demanded a ban
A day after the central government issued rules for the CAA, the Kerala-based political party Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) approached the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the implementation of the rules. The Kerala-based political party demanded that this law be banned and no harsh action should be taken against individuals from the Muslim community.
Apart from IUML, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Leader of Opposition in Assam Assembly Debabrata Saika Congress MP from Assam Abdul Khaliq and others also filed applications seeking to stay on the rules.
What was said in the petition?
The petition states that these laws are arbitrary and create an unfair advantage in favor of a section of persons based on their religious identity alone, which is not permissible under Articles 14 and 15 of the Indian Constitution.
The petition also said that since the CAA discriminates based on religion, it is attacking the root of secularism, which is the basic structure of the Constitution.
What is CAA law?
Let us tell you that the CAA was passed by the Parliament on 11 December 2019 and got the approval of the President the next day. CAA came into effect on 10 January 2020. This law seeks to grant citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians who fled religious persecution in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan and took refuge in India on or before December 31, 2014.
