68 Percent Voting in Chhattisgarh Panchayat Polls

Raipur, Jan 28 (IANS) The first phase of the Chhattisgarh panchayat elections recorded 68 percent voting Wednesday.

In the first of the three-phase elections, balloting was held for 54 Janpad panchayats of the state's 25 districts for the posts of sarpanch (village council head), panch (village council member), Janpad members, and Zila Panchayat members.

According to the Chhattisgarh State Election Commission's initial statistics, the state's Durg district witnessed highest - 87 percent - voting while Dantewada district recorded the lowest - 28 percent.

The commission said barring the Naxal affected regions, the other areas witnessed people casting their votes with great enthusiasm. The general areas witnessed 75 percent voting.
