Security systems will be made to protect the country's nuclear power plant systems (atomic energy) from cyber attacks. Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh gave this information in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. Singh said these security include authority, certification, access control, strict control, and monitoring of every system.
He said that nuclear power plant systems are isolated from the Internet and do not have access to administrative networks. But now the administrative network for nuclear power plants will also be strengthened. Many plans have been made for this. These include hardening internet and administrative intranet connectivity, banning removable media, and blocking websites and IPs.
Cyber attack on Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant
Singh raised the issue of the September 2019 cyber attack on the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. He said that it has been investigated by National Agencies like Computer and Information Security Advisory Group (CISAG)- DAE and Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In).
These security systems will be implemented
Physical separation of intranet and Internet access based on recommendations from national agencies, secure virtual browsing terminals for Internet access, secure data transfer rules requiring certified, independent security before posting new web applications or changes to the LAN.
A task force has been constituted to monitor the Infrastructural Architecture, Information Security Posture.
A cyber attack happened in 2019
There was a cyber attack on the Kudankulam Nuclear Plant in Tamil Nadu. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India had denied any such incident a day earlier. However, a day later he admitted that the computers in the plant's control system had been attacked by a virus. It was claimed that this did not affect the system and that the reactor is completely safe.
This matter came to light on 4 September 2019. After this, the Computer Emergency Response Team was informed about it. The specialist of the Nuclear Power Department also investigated it immediately. It was found that a user of the Institute had a virus in his system and that system was connected to the Internet network. Officials had told me that this system was separate from the internal network of the institute.
