The central government has recently launched the 'Agneepath' scheme. Through this, soldiers, sailors, and airmen will be recruited. This scheme has been named 'Agneepath' and the jawans who will be recruited in it will be called 'Agniveer'.
These jawans will be recruited for 4 years. In this, there will be no pension-related benefits, but some part will be deducted from the salary, which will be given in lump sum later. After four years, only 25% of the soldiers will be given a permanent appointment.
Maintaining balance in the army will be a challenge
There is an uproar across the country regarding this new recruitment policy. However, now it is up to the Armed Forces to not only implement it but take it as an advantage.
This scheme has some advantages and some challenges. Now the Armed Forces have to accept the challenges without disturbing the balance.
Talking about the benefits, now one-third of the share will retire every four years. In their place, new soldiers will come, whose age will be between 17 and a half years to 23 years.
Young people who retire in their thirties are also young, but there is no doubt that those in their twenties will be more energetic and more fit in terms of operational contacts.
Only the top 25% will get a permanent appointment
The young generation is very eager to join the army. Some people in this do not want to make the army a lifetime career. For those people too, this scheme is good.
The second important thing is that it will lead to better leadership development at the junior level, as only the top 25% will be appointed permanently and Agniveer will give his best aiming to be in the top 25%. In a way, it will act as a motivation for them.
80% of the defense budget goes to salary-pension
At present, 80% of the defense budget goes to salary and pension. After such a huge expenditure, very little budget is left for modernizing the armies. The new scheme will save the expenditure on salary and pension. However, it will also have some challenges.
Recruiter training is the first step in preparing a jawan. A sense of mutual camaraderie and belonging comes later.
Now the training period will be reduced. This will lead to the search for some innovative methods along with focused training.
After four years, the jawan may be worried about his future, but a disciplined and motivated candidate will be more capable than other candidates of finding employment. Still, no job guarantee can be given.
However, it would be good if the government gives preference to these soldiers in the Paramilitary and Central Armed Forces. It will be a win-win situation as jawans will get jobs and forces will be trained soldiers.
It will be necessary to give employment opportunities to the youth
Through this, the intention of the government is also to spread ex-soldiers in society. This is likely to increase the social quality, but to do this it is necessary that these youths are given the right employment opportunities, or else an unemployed trend can become a threat to the soldier society.
It can also be a challenge for Agniveer to build camaraderie, loyalty, and motivation like a full-time soldier. The jawan gives his life for his 'Paltan's honor' and the name means regiment, salt means country and Nishan means the flag of the platoon.
However, I am sure that the leadership of the army is of exceptional quality and they will very quickly adapt themselves to new situations. The government has also agreed to reform the middle order if needed. This is a welcome step.
They should be tried while welcoming the new reforms. Modifications can be made if needed. There is a big responsibility on the leadership of the army to implement it without disturbing the balance because both the neighbors are a challenge for us, who are equipped with nuclear power.
