The order of 470 aircraft by Tata Group-owned Air India is being discussed all over the world but Air India is not the only company in India to buy a record number of aircraft. Various domestic airline companies in the country are preparing to buy more than 1,100 aircraft in total. The country's largest airline Indigo has ordered around 500 aircraft and Akasa Air has ordered 72 Boeing narrow-body aircraft.
Of these, 16 aircraft have been delivered while 56 aircraft are yet to be delivered. GoFirst, formerly known as GoAir, has placed an order for 72 planes, while Vistara is about to buy 17 planes from Boeing. In this way, Air India, Indigo, Akasa Air, GoFirst, and Vistara will buy a total of 1,115 new aircraft.
Air passengers will increase at the rate of seven percent by 2041
Let us tell you that India is one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in the world. Aircraft maker Boeing estimates that the country will need about 2,210 new aircraft over the next two decades, with an annual increase of about 7 percent in the number of domestic air passengers till 2041. Aviation consultant Kappa says Indian airlines are likely to place orders for 1,500 to 1,700 aircraft in the next one or two years.
Indigo ordered 500 planes
If we talk about plans to buy new aircraft from different companies, then Air India has informed us that with a clear order for 470 aircraft, the airline has also acquired several options and purchase rights. Options and purchase rights mean that the company can purchase aircraft in the future based on terms and prices that are currently agreed upon. Air India had earlier placed an order for 111 aircraft in 2005. The company was then under government ownership.
The number of Indigo aircraft reached 300.
Indigo informed that in the December quarter of 2022, the airline bought 22 new aircraft, taking its total aircraft count to 300. The company has placed an order for 500 aircraft and the company will continue to add new aircraft to its fleet in a phased manner. Akasa Air, which started services in August last year, has placed an order for 72 Boeing 737 Max aircraft.
