Amidst the widespread protests and growing instability in Iran, several Indian citizens arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi late Friday evening. These citizens were primarily students, pilgrims, and other residents who had been stranded in Iran.
The Indian government had recently advised its citizens in Iran to leave the country due to security concerns. The Ministry of External Affairs clarified that it was continuously monitoring the situation and was committed to providing all possible assistance for the well-being of Indians. The embassy had contacted Indian nationals, urging them to leave Iran as soon as possible through available means.
One Indian citizen who arrived at the airport described the situation in Iran as "very bad" in an interaction with the media. He said, "The situation there is bad. Protesters were blocking roads and harassing people. We couldn't contact our families because the internet was shut down. The Indian government and the embassy provided full support... With Modi ji, everything is possible."
Another citizen told ANI, "We were there for a month, but the situation deteriorated in the last one or two weeks. As soon as we went out, protesters would come in front of our cars. The internet was shut down, and it became difficult to contact the embassy. With the help of the government, we returned safely."
The protests in Iran, which began in late December 2025, were initially against currency devaluation, inflation, and the economic crisis, but have now evolved into political demands. According to reports, thousands of people have died in the protests due to violence and actions by security forces, while internet blackouts and flight disruptions have become common.
The Ministry of External Affairs has already issued a strict travel advisory for Iran, urging citizens to avoid non-essential travel. India has ensured the safe return of its citizens through arrangements such as "Operation Swadesh."
