Ahead of the 2026 IPL season, Australian fast bowlers have created a predicament. Chennai Super Kings fast bowler Nathan Ellis has been ruled out of the upcoming season due to injury. Meanwhile, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood will miss the initial few matches.
The 2026 IPL is scheduled to commence on March 28. Cricket Australia is unwilling to take any risks regarding its fast bowlers; consequently, it is refraining from rushing their return in any way. Australia has a packed schedule ahead, and the board is keen to ensure that its key players remain fit.
Australia is slated to play approximately 21 Test matches over the coming year. This includes tours of South Africa, India, and England. Furthermore, in 2027, Australia will be tasked with defending its ODI World Cup title. The availability of Australia's 'trio'—Starc, Hazlewood, and Cummins—will depend on their recovery progress.
All Four Fast Bowlers Injured
It is worth noting that Australian captain Pat Cummins participated in only one Test match during last year's Ashes series due to issues with back pain. Meanwhile, Josh Hazlewood missed the entire series as he battled hamstring and heel injuries. Subsequently, he was also unable to play in the T20 World Cup.
Mitchell Starc played in all five Tests of the Ashes series but missed the T20 World Cup after retiring from the T20 format. Over the past 12 months, the 36-year-old Starc has bowled the highest number of deliveries in Test cricket—a feat surpassed only by Mohammed Siraj. Consequently, his physical management is being monitored with great care. Meanwhile, Nathan Ellis sustained an injury to his right hamstring during the T20 World Cup, resulting in his exclusion from the 2026 IPL season.
Ishan Kishan Named Captain
It is worth noting that 16 Australian players are participating in the 2026 IPL, including big names such as Travis Head, Cameron Green, Marcus Stoinis, and Tim David. The IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad recently announced that, in the absence of Pat Cummins, Ishan Kishan will captain the team. Abhishek Sharma will serve as the vice-captain of the 'Orange Army'.
