Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos recently said in Nikhil Kamat's podcast that launching Netflix in India with Sacred Games in 2018 was probably not the right decision. He said that if he got a chance again, he would have started with more popular content. Anurag Kashyap got angry at this.
He took a dig at Ted on Instagram calling him 'stupid', "He should have started with saas-bahu shows, then he would have done well. Now he is doing the same." Anurag's jibe was directed at Ekta Kapoor and Netflix's recent deal, in which content will be created in collaboration with Ekta's Balaji Telefilms.
Why was Ekta Kapoor angry?
Ekta Kapoor, who revolutionized the TV industry with superhit saas-bahu dramas like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kasautii Zindagii Kay, was angered by Anurag's comment. She replied to Anurag on her Instagram story, "You are such an idiot... by saying this you want to show that 'I am smarter and cooler', but no! Darling, show some grace and self-awareness!!! This is an art that many artists do not have." Ekta called Anurag's comment 'classist' and said that he was demeaning Indian family dramas.

Anurag criticized Ted Sarandos, saying, "I always knew that tech people are stupid in storytelling, but Ted is the definition of stupidity." He also called Netflix India 'useless' and said that the experience of working with them after Sacred Games was disappointing. Anurag said that Netflix is now moving towards content like Saas-Bahu in collaboration with Ekta Kapoor, which was a matter of joke for him.
