The grievance cell of the UGC (University Grants Commission) will now act as a third eye to protect the new students arriving on campus during the post-covid period from ragging. The aggrieved students will be able to complain on this 24 hours a day. Soon after this the commission will alert the concerned college administration and the process of constitution of the committee will start. In the stipulated time, the college administration will have to ensure that the aggrieved student gets the right solution.
Recently, it came to the notice of the UGC that 29 students of first year MBBS were ragged by seniors at Haldwani Medical College in Uttarakhand as soon as the campus opened after Covid. The commission says that it has been considered a very serious matter and a detailed report has been sought from the college principal about the entire incident. Apart from this, instructions have also been given to make arrangements for the safety of the aggrieved students to get counseling to get rid of mental problems.
Ragging is a punishable offense, how to complain
Any student can also directly register his complaint by calling on the UGC toll free number 1800-180-5522 at any time. As soon as the complaint is received, the commission's team will inform the concerned college administration. The college will have to start the investigation of the matter by forming a committee at the same time, so that justice can be done to the victim and the culprits can be punished at the earliest. If any college or institution does not conduct timely investigation in ragging case and fails to stop ragging, then the commission also has the provision to take punitive action against them.
Verified letter to be given online
The Commission has issued revised guidelines for medical, engineering, management, pharmacy, architecture, and all other universities and higher educational institutions to file anti-ragging affidavit in October 2021. Under this, all the students will have to give in writing at the time of admission that they will not be involved in any ragging case. It will also have the signature of their parent or guardian that their son or daughter will stay away from ragging.
Our aim is to provide ragging free campus to every student: UGC
University Grants Commission Chairman Prof. M Jagdish Kumar Ragging is a punishable offence. Haldwani Medical College has sought a complete report from the college principal in the ragging case.
