Bhopal
In the early hours of Thursday in Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, people woke up with a strange smell. Sudden breathing became difficult for people who slept inside their homes. Before anyone could understand anything, 3 people including 1 child had died. All this happened due to leakage of poisonous gas in a chemical factory. Till the last news, 8 people have lost their lives in this accident and more than 5 thousand have become ill.
People fainted and started falling on the streets
The leakage of poisonous chemical gas began at around two and a half in the LG polymer industry. Nearly 3 kilometers around the area where the factory is located in the RR Venkatapuram area of Naiduthota, people began to faint on the streets, eyes started burning and some people also suffered from blisters on the body. In a hurry, the administration evacuated 5 villages and sent the people to a safe place, but by then at least 5 people had lost their lives in the cheeks of poisonous gas. The relief work is going on in the area by the administration. NDRF teams along with local police have also reached the spot and are appealing for people to move to safer places away from the affected area. The administration claims that the situation is expected to be controlled soon, but how long it will continue to affect people affected by the increased infection of the corona virus is difficult.
Union Carbide accident memories are fresh
This incident of poisonous gas leak in Visakhapatnam brought back memories of one such accident which happened about 36 years ago. This accident, which was involved in the world's most severe industrial accidents, occurred in the year 1984 on the night of 2 December. Like Visakhapatnam, the poisonous gas leakage occurred from the Union Carbide Factory in Bhopal, the effect of which can still be seen clearly on the people there. However, the accident at the Union Carbide Factory was far more frightening and fatal than the one at Visakhapatnam.
Effect of gas accident still exists
On the intervening night of 2-3 December 1984, toxic gas leaks from Union Carbide's Fertilizer Factory and covered the entire city like a cloud. Then people were sleeping and many people died tragically. Those whose lives were saved, their lungs weakened and their eyes got worse. Many of them lost their intelligence and became psychopathic. The leakage of methyl isocyanide killed around 3,000 people and affected about 1.02 lakh people. The actual death toll was more than 15 thousand, but only 3787 deaths are recorded in the government records. People affected by this accident are still suffering from diseases like cancer, tumors, respiratory and lung problems.
