The Supreme Court is to hear on Friday the case of medical students who have returned from Ukraine. Earlier on Thursday, the Center told the Supreme Court that Indian undergraduate medical students who returned from Ukraine due to the war cannot be accommodated in medical colleges in the country.

Medical education will be affected by the admission of medical students after their return from Ukraine

The central government has told the Supreme Court that medical students returned from Ukraine cannot be accommodated in Indian universities in the absence of any provision under the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act, 2019. If any such exemption is given to them, it will have a serious impact on the standards of medical education in the country.

Health ministry affidavit

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in an affidavit, has said, in so far as such students are concerned, the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 or the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956, or There is no such provision under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 as well as the rules. As of now, foreign medical students are not allowed to be accommodated in any Indian medical institute or university by the NMC.

The victim petitioner had gone abroad for two reasons

First- Poor merit in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET)

If students with poor merit are allowed admission in reputed medical colleges of the country, petitions will be filed from many such candidates who either had to take admission in less reputed medical colleges or could not get admission at all.

Second- Affordable medical education abroad

If private medical colleges in the country are allotted to students going abroad based on affordable medical education, then once again they will not be able to bear the burden of fees of the respective institutions.
