Citizenship Amendment Act: Four years after being passed by the Parliament, the law to grant citizenship to non-Muslims (CAA) has been implemented in the country. As soon as this law is implemented, non-Muslim refugees coming from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh will be able to get Indian citizenship. However, these refugees will have to apply to get Indian citizenship.

These documents will have to be given along with the application

The applicant must provide a valid or expired passport, residential permit, and proof of Indian nationality of the spouse, such as a copy of the Indian passport or birth certificate or a copy of the marriage certificate issued by the Marriage Registrar. However, it is not mandatory to submit these documents.

Who are the characters?

Under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh will get citizenship. Non-Muslim refugees living in India before 2014 will be eligible. The entire application process will be online. The facility to apply will be available on the online portal.

What is the purpose of bringing CAA?

Let us tell you that the purpose of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is to protect those seeking refuge in India due to religious persecution.

In CAA, citizenship rules have been simplified for non-Muslim refugees from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

The applicant only has to prove that he had come to India before December 31, 2014. Rules have been set for this.

Was passed in Parliament four years ago

It is noteworthy that in December 2019, both houses of the Parliament passed CAA. The opposition had opposed this law. There were protests across the country against this. However, the government had said that this law is to give citizenship to minorities coming from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
