There has been a sudden increase in suicide cases in Japan. The reason for the increase in suicides is also puzzling. A new study has found that between March 2020 and June 2022, the Kovid-19 pandemic caused more than 8,000 suicides in Japan. This information was given by the news agency Kyodo. A group of researchers compared the expected number of suicide deaths based on past trends to the actual number of suicide deaths in a given period. The team concluded that there has been an increase in suicides due to the restrictions imposed due to Corona.
Most of the women committed suicide
The research found that most of the people who committed suicide were up to the age of 20 and among them, the number of women was also found to be very high. The research said that due to this epidemic, 1,837 people committed suicide under the age of 20, while 1,092 of them were women. Of the 377 women aged 19 years and below, 282 had decided to commit suicide due to the pandemic.
The economic situation worsened during the Corona period
Researchers said that non-regular jobs were the biggest reason for women's suicide. Due to this, they are affected more financially. One of the researchers, Tokyo Taisuke Nakata, associate professor at Osaka University, said that young people faced behavioral restrictions during this period, which led many children to take such a step.
Suggestions for changes in policies to the government
The news agency said that economic difficulties are believed to be the main reason behind the rising suicide rate in Japan, as the suicide death rate increases with increasing unemployment. Fumio Otake, a specially appointed professor at Osaka University, called on the government to change its policy taking into account statistics such as the number of suicides.
Recommendation to reduce the period of isolation
Let us inform you that Otek, a member of the government's panel on COVID-19 measures, said that we will also have to think about the decision to stop social and economic activities to prevent corona infection. He added that such restrictions increase many risks. Otek said measures such as shortening the isolation period for infected patients are necessary to continue socio-economic activities. Significantly, suicides in Japan have been decreasing at an annual rate since 2010. But, according to government data, the downward trend reversed in 2020 and continued in 2021 as well.
