Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone, who was landed up in Delhi to promote her new upcoming venture called “Chapaak”, on Tuesday visited the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus to express her full support with the students who were beaten up in the violence two days ago.
However, she left without addressing the crowd.
Padukone mainly reached the university campus at around 7.40 pm and made her presence marked by attending a public meeting, called by the JNU Teacher's Association and JNU Students'.
Even Padukone remained silent in standing as former JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar raised his slogans; when she then left by the time current president Aishe Ghosh started to speak.
Ghosh, who was also assaulted on campus on Sunday, mainly criticised the actor's decision to not address the crowd. All the actors and actresses who rightly serve India with haing a strong position, they must also do speak up and also stand up for the right”" said Ghosh.
JNUTA secretary Surajit Majumdar said Padukone came to express solidarity with the students.
Padukone on Monday said she feels really proud that people have finally come out and raised their voice without feeling any sort of fear inside them, they raised their voices in reference to the protests against the amended Citizenship Act, the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and violence in JNU.
“If we want to see good change in life and society, it is very important that a point of view be put forward," and take action of it.” she also added.
A group of masked men and women had already stormed the JNU campus in south Delhi on Sunday and intentionally targeted and beaten up students in three hostels, unleashing mayhem with sticks, stones and even iron rods, mainly hitting inmates and breaking windows, furniture and personal belongings. They also attacked a women's hostel.
We also demand the removal of V-C, identification of those who attacked students, and also rollback of fee hike," said Yechury.
